Em Portugal o dia de S. Martinho é celebrado um pouco por todo o país.

Reza a lenda que Martinho, um soldado Romano que estava a caminho de França. Ao cruzar os Alpes, numa zona muito fria, Martinho avista um homem muito pobre, vestido com roupas velhas e rasgadas, cheio de frio. 

Então Martinho pegou na sua espada, levantou-a e deu um golpe na sua quente capa vermelha. Dividiu-a ao meio e deu metade ao homem pobre, para que este se agasalha-se.

Nesse instante as nuvens e o mau tempo passaram e o sol reluzia quente no céu. Foi como que uma recompensa pela boa acção de Martinho, que entretanto foi nomeado Santo. 

É por esta razão que, todos os anos, no início de Novembro se assam castanhas e se prova o vinho novo, para celebrar o dia de S. Martinho.

In Portugal the day of St. Martin is celebrated all over the country.

According to the legend, Martin, a Roman soldier who was on his way to France, saw a very poor man, dressed in old clothes, chilly, while crossing the Alps, a very cold area.

So Martin took his sword, raised it and took a blow to his hot red cape. Divided it into the middle and gave half to the poor man, for him to warm up.

At that moment the clouds and the bad weather turn into a sunny and hot weather. It was like a reward for the good action of Martin, which since then has been named Saint.

It is for this reason that, every year, in early November it is a tradition to roast chestnuts and taste wine, celebrating the day of St. Martin.

Feira do Cavalo | Horse Fair Golegã

Este ano, integrada na Feira de S. Martinho, entre os dias 07 e 16 de novembro, na Golegã, decorre a 39ª edição da Feira Nacional do Cavalo e a 16ª edição da Feira Internacional do Cavalo Lusitano.

This year, as part of the St. Martin’s festival, between the 07th and the 16th of November in Golegã, take place the 39th edition of the National Horse Festival and the 16th edition of the International ‘Lusitano’ Horse Festival.

É durante estes dias, que a tradição, que teve início em 1571 nesta Vila do Ribatejo, volta a trazer à Golegã a visita de aficionados, profissionais, amadores ou simples curiosos do mundo equestre, cujo propósito é o de assistir, ou mesmo de participar, nas atividades equestres que decorrem na Feira.

It’s during this days, that the tradition, born in 1571, at this Village of Ribatejo, brings back to Golegã, the World of professionals, hobbyists or simply curious about the equestrian world. At this time of the year, Golegã is the place for many different activities: 

Apresentação de cavalos puro-sangue e apresentação de cavalos montados.

Presentation of thoroughbred horses and horse-mounted presentation

Concursos de salto de obstáculos e de cavalos de sela.

Jumping competitions and saddle horses shows

Desfile contínuo de amazonas, cavaleiros e atrelagens no largo do Areeiro

Aqui está o mote para um programa cheio de tradição equestre, aliado à tradição gastronómica, da castanha assada e da jeropiga, que garante a diversão de todos os que por lá passarem durante estes dias!

Novembro, o mês do Magusto! | November, the ‘Magusto’ month!

Em Portugal, os meses de outubro e novembro marcam a chegada do outono, com celebrações um pouco por todo o País. 

O Magusto, festa popular Portuguesa celebra-se nos dia de S. Simão (29 de outubro), no dia de Todos os Santos (1 novembro) e, principalmente no dia de S. Martinho, 11 de novembro. 

Amigos e familiares, principalmente na zona rural, juntam-se à volta de uma fogueira para comer castanhas, beber jeropiga, bebida alcoólica típica Portuguesa. 

Se estiver em Portugal durante este período irá deparar-se com um aroma característico a castanhas assadas que percorre as ruas do país, bem como várias festas do Magusto.

No Alentejo, decorre a tradicional Feira do Castanheiro e da Castanha, na Vila Medieval e no Castelo de Marvão. Este ano as festividades realizam-se a 8 e 9 de novembro e a Feira celebra a sua 31ª edição.

In Portugal, the months of October and November mark the arrival of the Fall with celebrations all over the country. 

The ‘Magusto’, a Portuguese popular festival is celebrated on the Saint Simon’s day (29th October), on the All Saints’ day (1st November), and especially on the Saint Martin’s day (11th November). 

Groups of friends and families, especially in the countryside, get together near a bonfire to eat baked chestnuts and drink ‘jeropiga’, a traditional Portuguese alcoholic drink. 

If you are in Portugal during this period you will be faced with a characteristic flavor from baked chestnuts which runs through the streets of the Country, as well as the various ‘Magusto’ festivals. 

In ‘Alentejo’ happens the traditional ‘Feira do Castanheiro e da Castanha’ (The Chesnut Festivities), in the Medieval Village and at the Castle of Marvão. 

This year, these festivities will be held on the 8th and 9th November and the event celebrates its 31st edition.
